The winery Pagos del Rey in DO Toro is located in the village of Morales de Toro (Zamora), near the village of Toro and the capital city, Zamora.
The height above sea level of Morales de Toro is around 700 meters. It is a small village where the cultivation of grapes is the principal activity, thanks to the superior environment and the quality of the vineyards, the average age of the vines is 50 years.
The origin of the winemaking tradition in DO Toro dates back to Roman times. In the Middle Ages, these wines were much sought after, and they were granted royal privileges. In the XIV century, by royal order, only DO Toro wines could be exported to America.
During the 19th century, large quantities were exported to France to fill the gap that had been left by the phyloxera plague.
