The second Pagos del Rey winery in chronological order is the one located in Rueda, the town in the province of Valladolid which gives its name to the DO of Rueda. The unquestionable star variety and identity of the area is the Verdejo.
Pagos del Rey DO Rueda, which commercialises the Blume brand (off trade) and the Analivia brand (on trade), has a privileged location at only a few metres from the main road which links Madrid and La Coruña. Here a newly created winery was bought, the Castillo Mudéjar, S.L., which started its activities in 2004. The purchase took place in spring 2005.
Since this time, work has been centred on “sweetening” the exterior appearance of the cellar, as the architecture is based on Mudejar brick. In order to give the building elegance and sobriety, the façade was lined with a small garden of ancient olive trees containing two sculptures of a musician playing the lyre and his muse. Furthermore, certain areas of the façade have been painted orange which has not failed to draw the attention of the locals.
This winery, which can hold up to four million bottles, started to produce wines from the 2005 harvest and within one year it was necessary to enlarge its capacity from the initial 1.7 million litres to the present three million litres. This was due to the high market demand for Rueda white wine which still continues today.
The young winery is totally modern and equipped with all latest technologies. It has a bottling plant with an output of 3,000 bottles/hour and a large and air-conditioned warehouse for storing the finished product.
Pagos del Rey DO Rueda makes varietals of Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc as well as Rueda, which mainly contains a blend of Verdejo and Viura or Macabeo.
